It is necessary to make sure your vehicle always has a valid MOT certificate. Without an MOT, you are breaking the law by driving the vehicle on a public road or highway.
The MOT test measures the roadworthiness of a vehicle to ensure it is safe to drive and is not a hazard to other road users.
If you are caught driving a vehicle without a valid MOT, no points are issued but you may be fined up to £1,000. Be sure to arrange your MOT before it expires.
You can check the current MOT status of a vehicle online using the Government website at:
There are some things you can check to make sure your vehicle should pass on certain aspects of the MOT examination.
Here are some items you can check yourself:
The MOT tester will check your vehicle in much more detail to ensure things such as brake pumps and chain belts are functioning properly. If you notice anything which may fail your vehicle, you should resolve the issue as soon as possible.
In any event that your vehicle does not pass the MOT test, you are required, by law to fix all items which caused the vehicle to fail.
Once your vehicle fails its MOT, it is logged onto the Government database and prevents you from using the vehicle on the road unless you are travelling to get the vehicle repaired. If you are caught driving outside of this allowance, you could be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT.
Not all MOT centres can do the repair work, but those that can should be able to provide a quote for the work that is necessary to pass the vehicle through the MOT re-test.
Once you have had the work completed on the vehicle, you can take it back to the garage that did the original MOT and you may be entitled to a free re-test.
MOT re-tests can be offered for free IF the vehicle that failed the MOT remains at the same garage that did the examination.
If the vehicle is taken away for repairs and then bought back for a retest, the garage can charge half the cost of a full MOT.
You must have your vehicle repaired and retested within 14 days of the failure otherwise a full MOT test is required and charged at the garages’ full price.
You can book your MOT 30 days before the current MOT expires.
On average, an MOT test can take between 30 and 60 minutes. You do not have to wait at the MOT premises whilst this is being done, but if you do decide to wait for your vehicle, we do ask that you try to arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment.
